Welcome Club

"THE WELCOME CLUB" was first started in 1992 by Rev Pat (Patricia) Clarke, and is still running thanks to the dedication of a small core of organizers.

When the farm of The Good Shepherd Church was demolished, a room was secured for the meetings at The Pillar of Salt, and continued there until January 2008, when it unfortunately closed down for a period. This led to a period of a few weeks with no place to meet, but the Treasurer Nancy Turner organized a trip to keep the members interested and assure them that a new meeting place was being sought.

Nancy fortunately was able to secure a new room which continues to be the meeting place at the ‘Carers' Building just next to the arches on London Road. This is directly opposite the bus stop for the Leftwich and Crewe buses.

There are currently 14 active members, and the meetings are 2pm until 3-45pm on Thursday afternoons. Prayers open the meeting, then a game of pass the parcel, followed by 4 games of Bingo with chocolate bars as prizes, a raffle, and tea and biscuits. There are also trips out, recent ones being Llandudno and Trentham Gardens, with further trips to be arranged soon.
There is room for new members - if anyone is interested please call one of the following Northwich numbers - Florence 47164, Nancy 47699, or Enid 41826.

We hope to see you soon - Florence Stanley - August 2008.

Mothers' Union

Davenham Parish Church Ladies Circle

March 2011 (Feb Meeting)

Cheshire’s Wildlife

I WAS on holiday when our first speaker of the year, Rob Raphael, gave a talk on the work of the Cheshire Wildlife Trust but from the responses I’ve heard so far it was an excellent and entertaining talk that delighted those present. It seems that we are quickly settling into our temporary ‘home’ and attendance was high. We’re hoping that any little niggles will soon be ironed out and would urge members to come forward if they experience any challenges.

Being on holiday meant I also missed Lynne’s maiden voyage as Chairwoman but I have no doubt that she rose magnificently to the occasion. My thanks go to Pauline for deputising for me after only one month as a committee member!

Our informal meeting for February was announced and we’d like to think that several of us will gather for a lunch at The Woodpecker on the 23rd. Raffle prizes were won by Irene Pilkington and Jean Diack.

Continuing the theme of ‘Cheshire Wildlife’, we’re having a member of the Greater Spotted Scout family as our speaker for March. At one time or another most of us will have seen these sociable creatures gathered together over a campfire when we’re out walking in the woods. Although they have rather drab plumage (which enables them to blend in with their surroundings) they are distinguished by their woggles and rather distinctive call – Ging gang goolie goolie goolie goolie watcha.

So do come along on Friday 11th March when we’ll be entertained by David King with his scouting reminiscences of “Twists, Beans and Smokey Tea” – and if you have a Greater Spotted Scout in your family then do bring him along!

Ladies' Circle Meet in the Royal British Legion Club,Firth Fields, Davenham, on the second Friday of each month, at 7.30pm

Davenham Bell Ringers

Stephen Knight with Bell-ringers

“You can ring my Bell”
THIS WAS the message from Stephen Knight, the captain of St. Wilfrid’s Bell Tower.
Have you ever wanted to play a musical instrument, but have been put off because you can not read music, or are tone deaf? Well with bell ringing the only mental ability is that you can count up to six, and physical ability to be able to climb fifty four steps.
As you can see from the photo this is suitable for both genders and all ages, the only restriction on age is that children under sixteen must be accompanied by an adult.
Out of the group above only two are from St. Wilfrid’s, others are from Warmingham and Witton towers. Sometimes they get visiting bands of ringers, in July 07 they were host to a team of cyclists!
Other activities that the ringers are involved with are: an annual ringing competition in April, ringing the bells at Chester Cathedral, ringing a mobile mini peal of bells at the Cheshire show, and ringing a set of hand-bells. They also visit other ‘Towers’ around the area.
Due to insufficient numbers they only ring on Sundays by special request

St. Wilfrid’s Bells
There are six bells situated in the Tower, they are over 300 years old. One bell was cast locally, with the other five being cast in Gloucester. The heaviest bell weighing 14 cwt, is known as the ‘Tenor’, with the lightest one being the ‘Treble’. The clock strikes the ‘Tenor’ bell with a special hammer.
For practice purposes there are special sound-proofing shutters fitted to the bell chamber.

Some advantages of becoming a bell ringer:-

  • Bell ringing is GREAT FUN!
  •  A unique hobby for whole families from 9 – 90
  • Very sociable group participation — you'll make friends for life
  • A craft almost 400 years old practised throughout the British Isles and in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Southern Africa and the USA — plenty of scope for travel !
  • Service to the Church — you will soon be able to make an important contribution
  • Lots of brainwork if you like it — but this is optional
  • Healthy light exercise — you don't need to be big and strong
  • It helps if you have a sense of rhythm and reasonable coordination — you don't have to be a musician

It’s been said that you can learn bell ringing in an hour, but it takes a lifetime to master it!
If you would like to try bell ringing with absolutely no commitment, come along on any Tuesday evening. Practice starts at 7.30pm and finishes about 9.15pm.
For more information contact Stephen on 01606 833742.

There is a plaque in the 'Bell Tower' from the Chester Diocesan  Guild, to St. Wilfrid’s Davenham dated 15th July 1986 celebrating:

A Peal of 5040 minor, Rung to celebrate the 900th anniversary of the mention of Davenham Church and priest in the Doomsday Book of 1086.
