The Team Reverend Martyn Cripps (Rector)
The Reverend Martyn Cripps is Rector, licensed by the Bishop of Birkenhead in October 2004. Martyn qualified and practised as a solicitor for many years before training for ordination at Wycliffe Hall, Oxford. After serving as curate in Canford Magna, Dorset, Martyn was incumbent respectively at St. Cuthbert's, Fulwood, Preston, then Christ Church Gipsy Hill SE19, and in the Benefice of Horning, in the Norfolk Broads where he was also Prior of St. Benet’s Abbey, the only Abbey not dissolved by Henry VIII. In between Preston and London Martyn and his wife, Meg founded Les Cotils Retreat and Conference Centre in Guernsey. Martyn and Meg have four adult children, and presently four grandchildren. Discerning God's Voice ... Martyn’s favourite passage: "The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favour." Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him, and he began by saying to them, "Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing." Luke 4:18-21 Alongside Meg, Martyn’s ministry has taken him on a varied journey with Christ. As part of the evangelical wing of the Anglican Church they were co-leaders of a teenage youth group, while at the same time Martyn developed his practice as a lawyer. After moving to the West Country he became a Church Warden, as well as a youth leader, and had an easy transition to becoming a licensed Reader. Then in 1980, after a fulfilling legal career he went to Wycliffe Hall, Oxford, to read theology and study for ordination. He was ordained in Salisbury Cathedral, serving as curate in Canford Magna parish where he shared in leadership as the parish grew in number from 400 to over 1,000 members. At the end of 1986 Martyn and Meg moved to St. Cuthbert’s, Fulwood, Preston, and for eight years they again witnessed considerable growth in the membership of the kingdom and the local church. In addition to the usual responsibilities as an incumbent, including the training of numerous curates and Readers, Martyn’s roles have been wide ranging, including as guest speaker at Parish Away Weekends, PCC study nights and Away Days, Colleges and Schools. Meg acts as a Spiritual Director, and recently as an advisor on Spirituality. Since October 2007 Martyn and Meg together have acted as ‘parents’ to eighty students in the Czech Republic at a School of Worship and Leadership, where they are both actively involved in Prayer Ministry and teaching. Martyn is a Trustee both of ‘MARS Trust’ (Marriage and Relationship Skills) which works among teenagers in schools as well a with Young Offenders, developing relationship skills (contact: email to, info@themarstrust.co.uk ; web site www.themarstrust.co.uk) and Angel Mountain Ministries, which seeks to encourage and enable worship and church leaders in the UK and across Europe.
